The Registered Nurse in Hummingbird House plays a key role in providing holistic care and support to children with life limiting conditions and their families.

 The Organisation:

1. Hummingbird House:

Hummingbird House, Queensland's only children's hospice, operates as a medically supported 'home away from home' for children affected by a life limiting condition, and their families. The stand alone purpose built facility offers 8 guest in care suites, 5 family accommodation units and a unique 'care at the end of life' suite.

Underpinned by the notion of creating a 'warm embrace' for children and their families, the multidisciplinary team provides 24/7hr scheduled and emergency specialist care short break stays; pain and symptom management; care at the end of life; and psychosocial support programs for the whole family. With strong connections locally, nationally and internationally with specialist paediatric palliative care services, Hummingbird House is an integrated community based service delivering flexible child and family centred care.  Clinical Excellence – providing best practice, holistic and innovative short break stays and palliative care for children and young people affected by life limiting conditions, and their families.

Role Accountabilities:

Align one's workplace behaviour in accordance with the Principles, Values and Mission of the organisation.

Clinical

1. Apply clinical decision making and practice at a level that reflects skill and competencies.
2. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care plans to meet the diverse and individual needs of children and families, reporting these back to the Care Team, Medical and Referral Panel as appropriate.
3. Manage own workload and that of others by ensuring appropriate delegation of skills and capability.
4. Participate in the induction and supervision of personal care workers, students and volunteers.
5. Demonstrated self awareness and recognition of professional boundaries in clinical nursing practice.
6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including written and oral skills.

 Service Development

1. Follow processes to ensure the requirements of policy, accreditation and palliative care national standards are delivered and met.
2. To make an active contribution to the on-going development of Hummingbird House.

 Associated Professional Responsibilities

1. Participate in clinical audit and evaluation of ways of work process and service effectiveness.
2. Participate in supervision sessions and appraisals.
3. Utilises reflective critical thinking.

Essential Requirements Essential: Must have a current Drivers licence and willingness to drive in the course of work.
Essential: Current AHPRA Registration
Essential: Minimum 12 months RN experience
Essential: Tertiary Experience in a related field such as Palliative care, paediatrics or learning disability
Essential: Demonstrated effective PC skills with an ability to competently use of technology.
Essential: Willingness to work within the philosophy and policies of Hummingbird House, Wesley Mission Queensland and The Uniting Church in Australia.
Desirable: Previous experience in paediatric palliative care
Desirable: Three years post registration experience with tertiary experience in a related field such as palliative care or paediatric nursing will be highly regarded.
Desirable: An understanding of National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards.
Desirable: Knowledge of grief and loss theories with experience in bereavement care.
