Communications Specialist
About the Role
Forming a key part of our Corporate Affairs, Media and Communications team, this critical role for a 12 month, fixed term contract will be responsible for producing high-quality communications to tight deadlines, across internal and external communication channels, and providing PR and crisis management support.
The Communications Specialist is a passionate communicator, who thrives in a fast-paced environment and can identify, generate and disseminate key communication pieces across a range of internal and external channels. The ideal candidate will be self-managed and have experience in quickly developing and nurturing a wide range of stakeholder relationships.
Key responsibilities include:
- Work with the Corporate Affairs, Media and Communications team and key stakeholders to develop and implement effective communication and PR plans and initiatives that support service area targets and ensure maximum engagement across both internal and external audiences.
- Ensure major communication projects are undertaken from beginning to end, including meeting with internal and external stakeholders, developing high-level communications, engaging and managing external contractors as needed, through to delivery of final products such as annual reports, key stakeholder updates, newsletters, speeches, blog articles, key messages, media releases and statements.
- Work with the Media and Corporate Affairs Advisor to provide support with ad hoc issues that arise which require crisis management and participate in an on-call roster for out of hours work.
- Provide support to the Media and Corporate Affairs Advisor to ensure proactive media strategies are aligned to the requirements of the business and the WMQ brand.
- Assist with oversight of social media content ensuring consistency and production of high-quality social media materials and participate in an on-call roster for monitoring social media channels outside regular business hours including weekends and public holidays.
- Assist in regular media monitoring of all media channels to identify and timely reporting on WMQ media mentions and coverage of key business areas and provide a daily media report to support the CEO and members of the Executive Leadership Team with emerging media industry trends and issues.
- Escalate and report matters relating to customer complaints and issues in a timely manner.
- Assist and support the events, marketing and fundraising teams to develop appropriate communications that align with the organisation’s brand and values.
About You
- Relevant tertiary qualifications such as Bachelor of Communications/Journalism and at least five years’ experience in a similar position.
- Demonstrated experience in producing high-quality communication pieces for a range of stakeholders under tight time constraints.
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- Demonstrated experience in effectively responding to unfolding issues and crises both independently and in a team environment.
- Detailed knowledge of the current media landscape with relevant contacts and the ability to identify opportunities and manage media coverage.
- Ability to work in an environment with constantly changing priorities and multiple client demands.
- Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to work productively with a range of stakeholders including senior management, staff, clients, media outlets, contractors and others
